As you get closer to your due date, one of the big tasks on your to-do list is packing your hospital bag. The idea of packing for labor can feel a little overwhelming—after all, you're not sure exactly what you'll need or how long you'll be there. But here’s the secret: Keep it simple! Focus on comfort and essentials, and you’ll be good to go.

Here’s a helpful list of what to pack to make your hospital stay as smooth as possible.

For the Birthing Person:

  1. Comfortable Clothing

    • A cozy robe or gown (you’ll want something soft for after labor).

    • Loose, comfy underwear and a couple of pairs of socks (fuzzy ones are a plus!).

    • Clothes for going home (loose and comfy!).

  2. Comfort Items

    • A soft blanket (hospital blankets aren’t always the coziest).

    • Eye mask and ear plugs (to block out light and noise when you need rest).

    • Chapstick (because dry lips are no fun!).

  3. Snacks

    • Easy snacks that can help you keep up your energy (because we just can't predict how long labor will be).

  4. Phone & Charger

    • Long charging cord to capture all the precious moments and keep in touch with loved ones.

  5. Birth Plan

    • A printed copy to give to your care team, just in case.

  6. Toiletries

    • Toothbrush, toothpaste, deodorant, and anything else that helps you feel fresh.

For the Partner:

  1. Comfortable Clothes

    • A change of clothes (you’ll likely be there for at least an overnight, probably a few days).

    • Comfortable shoes for walking around and supporting your partner.

  2. Snacks & Drinks

    • Bring snacks for yourself—just keep it quiet and easy (no smelly foods).

    • A refillable water bottle to stay hydrated.

  3. Phone & Charger

    • Keep your phone charged for pictures, updates, or just passing the time.

  4. Toiletries

    • Toothbrush, deodorant, and anything else for freshening up during a long day.

  5. Pillow & Blanket

    • You may end up staying overnight, so having something comfy from home is a big plus.

For Baby:

  1. Going-Home Outfit

    • A cute, comfy outfit for the ride home (think soft onesies, socks, and a hat).

  2. Car Seat

    • Don’t forget a properly installed car seat for the ride home!

*Most hospitals have diapers, wipes, and any other newborn care items you may need. Though, if you have something special you'd like to use, make sure to bring it with you!*
